CoolSculpting lawsuits target physical disfigurement in women

CoolSculpting lawsuits are being investigated by the attorneys at Alex Davis Law on behalf of women who have been disfigured by the fat-freezing technology. CoolSculpting is a non-invasive medical procedure that targets persistent fat cells to slim down the patient. The actual method that CoolSculpting refers to is called “cryolipolysis,” and was approved by the FDA in 2010. Currently lawsuits are being filed by individuals all over the country due to a horrific side effect of the procedure called Paradoxical Adipose Hyperplasia (PAH).

How does CoolSculpting work?

CoolSculpting is popular partly due to its non-invasive nature. It varies from more expensive and potentially harmful procedures in this way. Medical spa doctors and physicians will isolate an area—thighs, lower back, stomach, hips, butt, legs, arms—and bypass the surface-level skin using the CoolSculpting equipment. This freezes the fat cells, which then shrink, die, and filter out of the body.

This is possible because fat freezes at a different temperature than skin. The cryolipolysis device cools your fat to a temperature that destroys it while leaving your skin and other tissues unharmed.

What is PAH?

Paradoxical Adipose Hyperplasia (PAH) is a dangerous condition caused by the CoolSculpting process. It is a recent side effect that is becoming increasingly common amongst patients, and it can lead to serious physical disfigurement.

PAH is essentially the overgrowth (hyperplasia) of fatty tissue (adipose). The condition is labeled as paradoxical due to the way that it achieves the opposite effect, as intended by the CoolSculpting process. The condition is non-fatal, but it cannot be treated the same way as regular fatty tissue, which makes it unresponsive to traditional weight loss methods. The only way to treat PAH is through expensive and invasive surgical procedures. Women with PAH may have unwanted bulges of fat on their bodies which then must be removed with a second and more invasive procedure, for example liposuction.
