Zimmer Biomet has recalled its CPT Hip System due to an increased risk of postoperative thigh bone fractures. While similar devices have a failure rate ranging from 0.6% to 1.0%, this hip replacement system has a much higher risk of fracture around the thigh bone at 1.4%.
Not only does this cause thigh pain after hip replacement surgery, but these failures can also result in additional surgeries for the patient to correct the problems.
While Zimmer Biomet says it’s phasing out the sale of the devices, they are still on the market and are continuing to be implanted in new patients, prompting great concern from the Food and Drug Administration. The recall announcement, posted Sept. 17, 2024, does not require the implants to be discarded or returned, but instead simply alerts medical providers of the increased risks of implanting the devices with a 12/14 neck taper.
Zimmer Biomet sends warning letter to surgeons
Sadly, there are few requirements in the U.S. for manufacturers like Zimmer Biomet to notify patients directly about a medical device recall. Usually, the requirement is limited to hospitals and surgeons. Zimmer Biomet did notify surgeons about the faulty device in a recent letter stating that the CPT Hip System would be phased out of the U.S. market by the end of December 2024.
