Lawsuits alleging vision loss from the use of popular weight loss drugs Ozempic, Wegovy, Saxenda, and Trulicity, will be consolidated and transferred to the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. A ruling from the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation issued on December 15 states that numerous cases across the country are similar enough that they should be handled by the same judge in federal court.
The semaglutide medications, which are FDA approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, have become wildly popular in recent years for weight loss. Alex Davis Law Office represents numerous individuals with these vision loss claims across the country as part of our dangerous pharmaceutical legal practice.
“Ozempic Blindness”
The lawsuits in the new multidistrict litigation allege that the drugs, including Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic, Wegovy and Saxenda and Eli Lilly’s Trulicity, can trigger NAION, or non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy. The rare but serious eye condition causes sudden, irreversible vision loss due to blocked blood flow to the optic nerve, often called an “eye stroke” or “Ozempic blindness.” The damage is permanent, and both eyes can be affected.
Ozempic Stomach Injury Litigation
This new mass tort litigation is not a class action, and it is separate from the multidistrict litigation alleging the weight loss drugs cause gastroparesis, an uncurable digestive disorder where the muscles in the stomach do not move as they should for food to be digested. Although the injuries are different and both mass litigations will proceed separately, they will be before the same judge, U.S. District Judge Karen Marston. There are currently almost 3,000 lawsuits in the existing gastroparesis multidistrict litigation.
