Injury lawsuits focusing on Pfizer’s birth control drug Depo Provera continue to show explosive growth, with about 650 new cases being filed each month, court records show. The legal team at Alex Davis Law represents women across the country bringing claims related to a type of brain tumor called a meningioma which has been linked to Depo Provera.
Florida federal court case update
By far the most Depo Provera lawsuits are pending in federal court in the Northern District of Florida under the supervision of Judge M. Casey Rodgers. There are 3,790 plaintiffs with cases filed and pending before the judge. The next step in those cases is a series of rulings on motions filed by Pfizer to dismiss the cases. Pfizer claims federal law protects the company and that its warnings for the drug were sufficient. It also claims the plaintiffs’ expert evidence is not adequate for a jury trial. Judge Rogers hasn’t ruled on those motions, but she did ask lawyers on both sides to submit additional briefing in the wake of the FDA’s decision on December 12, 2025, to approve a new warning for Depo Provera regarding meningioma risks. You can read the current label with the new warning at this link.
Higher risk of meningioma tumor for women
The injectable version of Depo-Provera had a 550% higher risk of intracranial meningioma, according to a recent study. The risk increases for women who took Depo-Provera for longer periods of time. The link between Depo Provera and meningioma comes from its high levels of synthetic progestin, which mimics the hormone progesterone. In addition to the federal court lawsuits, there are 405 individual lawsuits pending in Delaware state courts, another 104 in New York and 39 in California.
Brand name vs. generic
The attorneys at Alex Davis Law Office have decades of experience with MDL mass tort cases involving a wide variety of medications and medical devices. We are investigating Depo-Provera claims in every U.S. state. Pfizer, the maker of Depo-Provera, did not warn consumers for years about the risks of meningioma. Pfizer also is challenging the claims if they are based on the generic version of the drug. However, some women took a mix of generic and brand name Depo Provera. This issue may play out differently depending on the state where the plaintiff lives. Some states, such as California and Massachusetts, have more favorable laws about manufacturer liability for generic drug use. Another wrinkle is so-called authorized generic drugs made by Pfizer.
